Sony learns from SL
95% of users are happy to be the consumer, but 5% are incredibly fanatical about creating a huge amount of content and the whole community benefits from it, and that is a really interesting trend. Look at Second Life. Everything about the experience is user-created content. That is a very, very powerful metaphor for where we’re going. We’ve got two things in development. One in this building and one with an external developer that, when we do share them with you, I think you’re going to go ‘Ah now I know what he was talking about.’”
Interesting SL remark by Sony worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison in reference to the PS3 over on Three Speech. Rezzible, the TourHUD and MIT Media Lab’s Sensor Networks project are but three of the latest creative SL initiatives I learned about via my RSS feeder today. Kitten Lulu and profy have good write-ups on Rezzible’s offering.
As Lindsay Campbell pointed out on Wallstrip yesterday Sony is so much more than one offering. Chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer recently referred to its battery recall and PS3 delays as presenting the perfect storm for accelerating internal change. With Sony facing its moment of truth transitioning to an always on, open and connected world time will tell how relevant Phil and Howard’s remarks prove to be.
